PUBLIC SECTOR INNOVATION AWARD
Winner: London Buses Transport for London has given the green light to the introduction of hybrid buses in London to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, air pollution and noise. Around 100 buses will be phased into the fleet by 2010 with a further 500 each year from 2012 – no other EU public transport authority has announced such an ambitious hybrid bus programme. TfL has worked closely with several manufacturers during vehicle development, and has already succeeded in stimulating the UK hybrid bus market.
TfL has a close working partnership with Wrightbus, the manufacturer of the hybrid buses currently in operation, and the two bus operators trialling the vehicles - Go Ahead and Arriva North London. Regular liaison and exchange of information between the partners helps to closely monitor and evaluate the performance of the vehicles and identifies areas for further modifications and improvements in the next generation vehicles.
Runner-up: Govt Car & Despatch Agency The Government Car and Despatch Agency are the government's own services for moving people and documents around the UK, both safely and economically.
Using hybrid electric/petrol cars or cars that run on Liquefield Petroleum Gas (LPG), the agency is providing a service that protects the environment. Their cars significantly reduce the number of harmful pollutants that have been shown to contribute to poor air quality.
Commended: London Borough of Bromley Bromley’s School Travel Plan project has succeeded in reducing car use, raising awareness and protecting the environment. Compared to 2005, by 2007 car use has reduced by around 16% and around 2 tonnes of CO2 emissions have been avoided. |
