PUBLIC SECTOR FLEET OF THE YEAR
Winner: London Borough of Islington The borough of Islington is tackling climate change by considering every conceivable angle relating to their fleet.
By purchasing the latest vehicles such as the Modec commercial EV, the Smart EV, over fifty LPG vehicles, hybrid cars and running their larger vehicles on bio-diesel or liquefied natural gas, the borough can save a significant amount of fuel and dramatically reduce their emissions.
The savings made across the entire fleet due to fuel reductions, congestion charge savings, reduced VED and raising the profile for grants have saved an estimated £198,000 and 184 tonnes of CO2.
The future at Islington will include participation in the SELTRANS bio-diesel project, blending their own percentages and also utilising waste oils to power the vehicles collected from within Islington. The borough will be testing other bio fuels, testing diesel hybrids and hoping to pilot a hydrogen powered vehicle to evaluate its benefits.
Runner-up: Govt Car & Despatch Agency Government Cars has taken the lead in Government Departments in respect of reducing fleet CO2 emissions and has had success in ensuring the fleet is more environmentally friendly than ever before.
Although the rate in which Government Cars can cut emissions will slow down in the coming years assuming vehicle technology remains the same, we hope to achieve further savings in mileage which, in turn, will save money for government departments as well as have a further positive effect on air quality.
Commended: Gateshead Council The Transport Service of Gateshead Council has continued to develop new and innovative working practices to reduce the effect our operations have on the environment. increasing costs. |
