TFL PUBLIC SECTOR FLEET AWARD
Winner: London Borough of Islington The London Borough of Islington is tackling climate change by considering every conceivable angle relating to its fleet.
By purchasing the latest vehicles such as the Modec commercial EV, the Smart EV, over fifty LPG vehicles, hybrid cars and running their larger vehicles on bio-diesel or liquefied natural gas, Islington saves a significant amount of fuel and dramatically reduces emissions. The borough are currently in the process of renewing the majority of their refuse and recycling fleets which will run on bio-diesel and have Euro V SCR engines to reduce emissions.
The savings made across the entire fleet due to fuel reductions, congestion charge savings, reduced VED and raising the profile for grants have saved Islington an estimated £198,000 and 184 tonnes of CO2.
Runner-up: Govt Car & Despatch Agency Green Cars operates 24/7 and can be used for journeys in, around, to and from London. The Green Cars are charged out at fixed prices per journey, so you always know the cost before you step into the car.
To offer a service that's kinder to the environment, the GCDA only use hybrid electric/petrol cars or cars that run on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) OR 5% bio diesel blend. The cars significantly reduce the number of harmful pollutants that have been shown to contribute to poor air quality. The agency's cars are recognised by Transport for London and are currently exempt from the Congestion Charge.
Commended: Bexley Council Bexley continues to monitor and analyse its impact on the environment trying to discover new ways of helping the borough. The council has launched a number of local campaigns with the “Don't choke Britain” campaign taking place in June each year. Bexley is currently in the process of developing the SELTRANS BISTRO project using bio-fuels and potential partnership arrangements. The council is also aiming through their car pool scheme to encourage alternative commuting modes and more sustainable business travel.
