BREAKDOWN/RECOVERY COMPANY OF THE YEAR
Winner: RAC RAC has measured its carbon emissions for 2006 and has invested in projects that offset its footprint. A number of projects around the world have been selected with parent company Aviva, and assured for legitimacy, which have both an environmental and social benefit. These include a substitute to conventional ‘Portland’ cement, as it is made from the by-product of iron and steel production and therefore avoids most of the process emissions involved from making cement from scratch.
A demonstration and trial of the Modec commercial vehicle has been arranged in Norwich, with consideration given to extending the use of electric vehicles to the commercial fleets in other cities, including London.
Environmental programmes and procedures in place across RAC Patrols include satellite navigation and intelligent deployment systems designed to reduce fuel consumption, patrol fleet congestion and speed rescue. A working group has been established to consider further environmental and operational efficiencies across the non-car fleet.
A 100% zero emission electricity contract is in place across RAC buildings, and a green travel plan including a lift-share parking and travel scheme. The combination of initiatives has won RAC the GreenFleet Breakdown/Recovery award for the second year running.
