Industry Innovation Award
This award is presented to the organisation that has introduced a new technology, practice or method that reduces fuel consumption and emissions and demonstrates innovation in its design and/or implementation.

2009 Winner: BMW
EfficientDynamics is BMW’s approach to reducing fuel consumption and lowering emissions. Intelligent Lightweight Engineering, refined aerodynamic design, highly efficient engines with innovative fuel injection technology and modern energy management systems – such as Auto Start-Stop and Brake Energy Regeneration – all combine to form the EfficientDynamics philosophy, which features in every new BMW and MINI.

Since facets of EfficientDynamics technologies were introduced in 2006, a staggering amount of financial and environmental savings have been made. On a Europewide basis, more than 700,000 EfficientDynamics cars were sold in 2008, which, according to BMW, saved more than 33 million gallons of fuel and equates to a reduction in CO2 of 373,000 metric tonnes in Europe, 54,000 tonnes of which was saved in the UK alone.

BMW recently announced the groundbreaking 163hp, 137mph ‘320d EfficientDynamics’, emitting just 109 g/km and delivering 68.9mpg. It will be the first sub 110g/km premium segment car, setting a new benchmark. Looking to the future, BMW Hydrogen 7 demonstrator models are already on the road, and have made appearances at several green car events in the UK. Furthermore, the British Government announced in June that a consortium led by BMW Group will be supported, enabling the electric MINI E to be tested on British roads before the end of 2009.

"Our business is driven by the Triple Bottom Line principle which means that they strive to be economically viable, socially responsible and environmentally sound in everything we do. The 3-Series chosen use 28% less fuel than the average company car sold last year, equivalent to a reduction of over 65 tonnes of CO2 per year.” - Nick Bailey, Novo Nordisk, UK
