Private Sector Fleet Manager of the Year
Recognising an individual currently working as a fleet manager in a private sector company that has demonstrated a commitment to making carbon reduction a priority in their day to day duties, and has promoted green fleet practices to other parts of their organisation.

2009 Winner: Robert Paddock - Commercial Group
Commercial has a plan to reduce carbon emissions by 75% in three years. In order to fully understand the what, when, why and how of vehicle movements, Fleet Manager Rob Paddock has developed a detailed fuel and mileage monitoring system. Initially used for the vans, it is now being implemented for the car fleet and allows a high level of vehicle management.

Driver training is promoted through both the use of both internal and external agencies, and new employees are strongly encouraged to take a supervised drive with Rob to establish their driving ability.

To fuel their vehicles, Commercial looked at a number of options, including using electricity and LPG, and decided on using bunkered biodiesel as this would provide the best solution. Commercial then negotiated with a Local fuel supplier Uwinbio, for the provision of high quality sustainable biodiesel from local waste sources, minimising the environmental impact further. The Commercial solution uses Datatrack DT fuel safe variable pump blend system, allowing for any quantity from 100% mineral diesel to 100% biodiesel. This is fully automated using Key fobs and driver pin codes to dispense and blends automatically, with pump dispensing data liked to fleet management software by a data cable. Monthly fuel usage reports can be produced by vehicle or by department

Between 2006 and 2008, fleet emissions dropped from 910 tonnes CO2e to 435 tonnes CO2e, a 52% reduction. Rob is a trusted, respected and well loved member of the Commercial family, someone to whom everybody turns when they need help. Commercial’s Managing Director, Arthur Hindmarch, says “Rob provides a solid, dependable foundation whilst also showing initiative and looking to future technology. He will seek out money saving alternatives and implement new methodology. I can trust him to move mountains should the need arise.”
