Public Sector Fleet Manager of the Year
sponsored by Green Motion
Recognising an individual currently working as a fleet manager in a UK public sector organsation that has demonstrated innovation, dedication and a commitment to making carbon reduction a priority in their day to day duties.

2009 Winner: Alan Hocking, Humberside Police
From its conception in 1974 the Humberside Police have always looked to the future for ways in which it can not only impact on the reduction of crime, but also on the ways that its decision making effects the community it serves in terms of environmental and social issues. Reducing the environmental impact of operating its essential fleet of vehicles is a logical progression of the force ethos.

Humberside Police employs 2,263 Police Officers and 1953 Support Staff. The force operates a fleet of 625 motorised vehicles that cover approximately 9 million miles per annum, and consequently managing down the environmental impact of such an essential fleet service is a high priority and long term commitment.  The process began in 1996 when following evaluation of LPG, it was concluded that there was no drop in performance, with a 10 to 15% reduction in MPG, saving on fuel costs and significantly reducing emissions. Twelve years on these results are still valid -  the force is currently saving more than £250,000 each year, and these savings increase as more converted vehicles are commissioned and fuel prices continue rising. The force operates one of the largest alternatively fuelled fleets in the UK, with 436 converted vehicles of various types including Protons, Vauxhall Astras, Ford Transits and Mercedes Sprinters.

Following an evaluation of Bio-Diesel, involving some 46 operational policing vehicles, the fuel has been adopted at each of the force's remaining six diesel-refuelling sites. Advice continues to be given to other fleet operators keen to explore the environmental and financial implications of alternative fuel sources.

Fleet and Supplies Manager Alan Hocking has been in post for 21 years. He retires in January 2010, and is this year a worthy recipient of the 2009 GreenFleet Public Sector Fleet Manager of the Year, for blazing a trail with Humberside’s innovative use of alternative fuels.
