Winner:  Volvo
A 2009 Volvo truck is 100 times cleaner in terms of engine emissions than one from only 20 years ago. At the same time as exhaust emissions have dropped significantly, Volvo trucks fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions have been reduced by 20%. The company aims to continue this trend by cutting fuel consumption by at least 1% per year on average.

To that end, the Volvo D13 and D11 litre Euro 5 emission compliant engines which were launched this year are also available in versions which meet the even lower particulate and smoke emission levels specified in the Enhanced Environmentally friendly Vehicle (EEV) standards, a voluntary framework applied by local authorities to speed up the introduction of vehicles with a significantly reduced environmental footprint.

The majority of Volvo trucks are now sold with the company’s I-Shift transmission and this proportion is increasing year on year. The 2009 version features enhanced software that further helps reduce fuel consumption.

Volvo Group UK’s multi-faceted approach has seen the launch of its hybrid technology powered double deck buses. Six of the Volvo B5Ls are operating on route 141 (Palmer’s Green to London Bridge) under a trial with Transport for London. The I-SAM hybrid system delivers up to a 30% saving in fuel usage. The parallel hybrid system can be operated in very quiet, zero emission, purely electric mode or with the Volvo diesel engine engaged as the system requires for maintaining battery charge. A Volvo Hybrid 26 tonne GVW Refuse Collection Vehicle is also scheduled to enter service in Central London in October. This is the first in the UK, and an 18 tonne Volvo Hybrid Distribution truck will also enter service in London this year as part of the build up to providing low emission transport for the Olympics.
